After a gloomy, cold winter, all you really want to do is hit the sand and enjoy the sun. These play-days are well deserved, but before scheduling your beach day, take a few minutes to get prepared. If you remember these five easy items, you will ensure a safe, pleasant, and restful day in the sun.
- Lather up the sunscreen:
You should already be wearing broadband sunscreen every day, to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays, even on cloudy days. When planning time outside or at the beach, however, be sure to reapply an SPF 15 or higher sunscreen at least every two hours. A good SPF lip balm will also provide important protection for your lips.
- Cover up with a hat and sunglasses:
It is not enough to use sunscreen; you should stay covered when not in the shade. A wide brimmed hat, movie-star-large sunglasses, and a beach umbrella will further protect your eyes and skin, while keeping you cool, as well.
- Water, water, water:
Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Being out in the heat can quickly deplete your body’s resources, and without realizing it, you could be on your way to dehydration and even a heat stroke. Drink lots of liquids, but beware of alcoholic beverages, as they can contribute to dehydration.
- Check the beach report:
Before setting up your lounge chairs for some sunbathing, check the beach report. Tide times are important to remember. During hurricane season, water conditions can also change quickly, so know how rough the sea is before taking a dip.
- Have extra moisturizer at home:
After you have showered and washed away the saltwater or sand, pull out the moisturizer. Your face, shoulders, and even feet can use an extra dollop of cream to keep them from drying out.
Fill up your beach bag ahead of time with sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, swimsuit cover-up, extra water, and moisturizer. That way, all you need to do to be ‘beach ready’ will be a quick glance at the weather report before grabbing your bag. By taking a few minutes to prepare, you are guaranteed some fabulous fun in the sun!
