Rosacea is a common skin disease generally characterized by red, flushed areas of the skin. Often noticed on the cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, and ears, the signs of Rosacea can also appear on areas of the body, such as the back and chest. Rosacea can be a problem for any age, although it is most often seen after the age of 30. People with a fair complexion are at greater risk but any skin tone or ethnicity may experience symptoms of Rosacea. Up to one in twenty Americans will deal with Rosacea during their lifetime.
Symptoms of Rosacea can include a flushing of the cheeks and face, persistent redness, bumps or pimples, and the appearance of visible blood vessels. Additionally, the eyes may become irritated or appear bloodshot, the skin becomes excessively dry, and the tissue becomes thick and swollen (most often the nose). The signs of Rosacea can cause embarrassment and a loss of self-esteem. When the symptoms are ignored, this disease will almost always progress and become more significant, greatly affected the individual’s overall health and quality of life. With proper treatment by a healthcare professional, Rosacea can be well controlled and even reversed.
The Cause of Rosacea:

- Spicy food
- Alcohol, hot beverages, caffeine
- Strenuous exercise
- Extreme hot or cold temperatures
- Cosmetics containing alcohol and glycolic acid
- Strong cortisone medications
- Sun exposure

Sharon has been my aesthetician for about two years now and she’s simply incredible. With consistent treatments in conjunction with daily product application, my skin has transformed. I enjoy not having to depend on makeup to cover hyperpigmentation, large pores and other embarrassing skin marks. I also appreciate her educating me on my skin and what products to use/not to use.

Type of Rosacea:
Rosacea can be broken down into in four ‘sub-types’. The symptoms may not move sequentially; many patients will have indicators from more than one category. The extent of Rosacea characteristics exhibited will determine the treatment necessary. It is important to remember that when caught early, the symptoms of Rosacea can be controlled and the progression of the disease reversed.
Type 1: Facial Redness
- Frequent, intermittent flushing
- A ‘burning’ sensation under the skin
- Dry skin
- A few broken blood vessels, or telangiectasia, under the skin
Type 2: Bumps or Pimples
- Flushing is more frequent
- More apparent telangiectasia
- The appearance of papules (bumps) or pustules (fluid filled bumps)
Type 3: Thickening of the Skin
- Swollen, thick areas of excessive skin
- Nodules
- Rhinophyma, or an enlargement of the nose
- Patches of redness on the skin
- Telangiectasia
Type 4: Irritation of the Eyes
- Red, dry eyes
- Itching and tearing of the eyes
- Gritting sensation
- A sensitivity to light
- Blurry vision
The Ideal Candidate for Rosacea Treatment:
Anyone, male or female, who is struggling with the unsightly appearance of Rosacea, may make an excellent candidate for treatment. Patients should be in good health and have reasonable expectations for the procedure. Once a consultation with Dr. Vitenas or an aesthetician at the Mirror Mirror Beauty Boutique has been scheduled, a treatment plan can be designed to meet the individual’s unique needs.
Treatment of Rosacea:
At the Mirror Mirror Beauty Boutique, several treatments for Rosacea can be employed, depending on the individual patient’s needs and the progression of the condition. Excellent results are seen with both IPL or LimeLight and Laser Genesis. These noninvasive procedures can dramatically improve the areas of redness and telangiectasia associated with Rosacea. An antibiotic may be used, as well, to help decrease areas of inflammation.
LimeLight IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is a gentle light-based therapy used to reduce the appearance of dark spots, sun damage, vascular conditions and broken veins. No anesthetic is necessary, as the IPL treatment causes no discomfort. Patients feel well enough to return to work or school the same afternoon as their IPL treatment.
Laser Genesis is a noninvasive therapy, utilizing laser energy to safely decrease the appearance of redness and small veins. Using a handheld piece, brushed lightly over the skin, the lower levels of the dermis are heated. This warmth will increase the body’s natural production of Collagen, improving the skin’s appearance. Laser Genesis does not cause any discomfort, the laser tip cools the skin before, during, and after treatment. There is no downtime after the laser procedure; patients are free to immediately return to their normal routine right after treatment.
Tips for Controlling Rosacea Breakouts:
- Use a gentle, soap-free cleanser
- Avoid loofas, brushes, and granular products on the face
- Rinse the face thoroughly with warm water
- Avoid topical medications
- Use an oil free moisturizer
- Always wear sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher

Rosacea FAQs
A common skin condition, Rosacea results in red, flushed skin occurring on the cheeks, chin, forehead, ears, and nose. Rosacea may also be seen along the chest or back.
While the exact cause is unknown, Rosacea can have a wide variety of triggers. These can include caffeine, spicy food, vigorous exercise, cosmetics, medications containing cortisone, extreme temperatures, sun exposure, and alcohol.
The most common signs of Rosacea include a general flushing or patches of redness on the face or body, a ‘warming’ feeling under the skin, broken blood vessels on the face, skin thickening, swelling, eye irritation, pustules, and papules.
Today, there are several excellent methods available to treat Rosacea. The Mirror Mirror Beauty Boutique frequently uses IPL or LimeLight and Laser Genesis to reduce the redness and broken blood vessels that accompany Rosacea. An antibiotic can be included to decrease inflammation.
LimeLight or IPL (intense pulsed light) is a light-based therapy designed to rejuvenate the surface of the skin by reducing the appearance of feckless, age spots, and sun damage. LimeLight is gentle on the skin and safe enough for use on the face, chest, back, and hands. With no downtime required, patients are able to immediately return to work or school after a LimeLight treatment. The procedure is quick, comfortable, and takes under 30 minutes in the office.
The Laser Genesis treatment is a uniquely designed laser resurfacing tool used to stimulate new Collagen growth, gradually improving the texture and tone of the skin. Laser Genesis can reduce the redness associated with Rosacea, while treating other skin problems such as large pores or acne scars. The treatment requires no anesthesia, takes less than 30 minutes in the office, and best of all, needs no downtime.
The exact cost of IPL will depend on the area being treated and how many sessions are required. An individual treatment will cost between $75 and $500. IPL packages are available in various sizes for a reduced price.
Typically, Laser Genesis will run between $300-$500, depending on the treatment area and the level of correction needed. Specially priced Laser Genesis packages are also available.
